Teaching Kids to Brush

Adult dental care is a topic I have written about a lot on this blog; from types of toothbrush, to mouth washes and flossing. One thing I have not written about, though, is dental care for children. I was talking to a friend of mine whose son is almost two years old and learning to brush his teeth on his own for the first time. I asked what the fuss was about; after all you just give them a brush and tell them to put it in their mouths, don’t you?
She told me that it wasn’t that simple at all. Kids, it turns out, are completely unresponsive to instructions. They act out, throw things around, and don’t listen at all. Talking as someone who doesn’t have children I was not a good person to offer advice. She shows him how to do it, demonstrates the proper action and hope it sticks. Repeating that process daily is at least an indication to him about what he should be doing as well.
